On Friday a new release of the Eclipse Oxygen based NXP MCUXpresso IDE V10.3.1 has been made available. The IDE supports MacOS, Linux and Windows 32/64-bit and will be 64-bit only going forward.

MCUXpresso 10.3.1 About Information

As the version number change from V10.3.0 to V10.3.1 indicates: this is a maintenance and bug fix release.

A list of changes is available in the NXP community at MCUXpresso IDE v10.3.1 now available. I had instructed students to install the 10.3.0 and this worked fine. There was only one minor installation/permission issue on MacOS X which we fixed manually. That issue seems now fixed in that v10.3.1 which will make things even next time or if new students join the classes (students can register/unregister from a course the first two weeks). I already switched all my lab projects to v10.3.1 this weekend without issues. There is actually no switching: I simply created a new workspace and imported (drag&drop) all my projects from Git and other places to the new IDE and done.

There is one thing NXP gives a heads-up: that v10.3.1 is supposed to be the last version supporting Windows 32-bit systems. I already switched to 64-bit windows with Windows 10 about 4 years ago, so this change is not an issue at all. And the last time I had a student showing up with a 32-bit Windows machine was 2 years ago. Or is there still anyone out there using 32-bit Windows versions, except for some legacy development? Anyway the Eclipse 2019 releases are 64-bit Windows only. While it is possible to run Eclipse with 32-bit Windows systems, the future is 64-bit only.
