Electrical Race Car: From 0 to 100 km/h in 0.956 Seconds

Every year, the students of HSLU and ETHZ build an electrical race car and compete in Formula Student, the world’s biggest competition for engineers. A team of students and alumni wanted to break the current acceleration record of an electrical car (1.461 seconds). They achieved an incredible acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than one second!

The AMZ team used the race car ‘mythen’ from the 2019 season: they improved the aerodynamics, replaced the power inverter, added new motors, optimized the batteries for weight, and many other things.

Already the first of multiple runs was below the current world record time. Several more measurements followed, with the last three ones as the fastest runs:

  • From 0 to 100 km/h in 0.956 s
  • 100 km/h after 12.24 m
  • Maximum acceleration of 3.81 g

The ‘Tagesschau’ (in German) captured the event (see at the end of the video): https://www.srf.ch/play/tv/tagesschau/video/tagesschau-vom-01-09-2023-hauptausgabe?urn=urn:srf:video:2704f561-65d9-480a-80a7-583813b55880

That new world record accelerating an electrical race car is not official yet in the Guinness Book of Records, as it takes some time to get everything verified and approved. Fingers crossed!

Congratulations to the entire team!

Happy accelerating 🙂

  1. The Tagesschau link is not great. I see a different video, only 2 minutes,
probably because I am outside of Switzerland.
Probably better to post videos on youtube or Vimeo or like.
Anyhow, no big deal, all good.

  2. An amazing achievement by this next generation of Automotive Engineers: Europe needs them to be competitive in the global EV market.
