Wildflowers, by Altitude

A very nice and relaxing vacation week in Austria comes to its end. It was fascinating to see how nature changes by altitude: the lower areas had big and ‘expensive’ flowers, while in the higher areas they were much smaller and had to survive a much harsher environment.

Here a few examples, starting from around 1000 meters above sea level, up to about 2400 meters:

Well, no flowers any more, but colorful Lichen 🙂

Are you tired from pictures from mountains, butterflies and flowers? From next week on, things will be about embedded software, tools and microcontroller again. Mostly 😉

Happy Flowering 🙂

  1. Erich, I’ve been very pleased to read of your holiday. It looks a great place. You might consider walking in New Zealand’s mountains some day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Routeburn_Track#mediaviewer/File:Humboldt_Mountains,_South_Island,_New_Zealand.jpg

I fear the first of your wildflowers is actually a nasty invasive species (at least it is where I live) – Himalayan Balsam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impatiens_glandulifera. The others look authentic!

    • Yes, New Zealand is definitely on my list of places I would like to go 🙂
Thanks for the link about that species: I was wondering myself about it, and indeed that picture matches that flower. I have seen it in only two places, but according to Wikipedia it is really considered as an invasive species in other areas.
